Luke 3

Hi all,

Here are some questions for you to ponder about Luke 3.

Q6 If Jesus didn’t need to repent, why do you think he received John’s baptism?

Q7 Why does Luke include the genealogy at this point in his gospel? What point is he trying to emphasise?

I'll post my comments on these questions after a few other people have posted!

See you at Winter Training! (see dates and topics on www.standys.org.au)

A6: to fulfil all righteousness

The call by John for people to be baptised was a radical one because Jews already considered themselves clean and everyone else unclean; it was gentiles' place to be baptised if they were to come before God. Those that accepted John's baptism showed that they were faithful to God and trusted that God would be faithful to his promises. I think Jesus' baptism is his demonstration of faithfulness to God's plans and perhaps a demonstration of the correct way to conduct yourself before God - with humility, even for his son.

Perhaps in looking at the genealogy you need to look at Luke's purposes in writing this whole gospel - "to write an orderly account... that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught." (Lk 1:3-4) The whole book is quite methodical and historical while still making it clear that Jesus is the Son of God. It seems to me that the genealogy is more evidence that Jesus is the one God promised - through Abraham, through David. Like it says in Romans, just as through one man came sin and death through one man comes life - Jesus is even of Adam's line, but he brings life to the world rather than death.

Look forward to seeing what you have to say :)
